## GPS location tracking

Cadmus sends your position to dispatch so units appear on the live map. **How** tracking works depends on the device:

| Device | What is tracked | When tracking starts |
| --------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Desktop MDT** (Windows, Linux, macOS) | Your **apparatus / unit** only | Automatically when you sign in and dispatch has you on an active crew |
| **Activated apparatus tablet** (unit-device mode) | The **enrolled unit** | Automatically when the device session is active |
| **Handheld phone or tablet** (officer sign-in, not unit-device) | **You** as a person | **Manual** — start from the dashboard **LOCATION** card or **Settings → Location services** |

<Note>
Handheld phone tracking reports **your** GPS position. It does not move your apparatus on the dispatch board. That avoids duplicate markers when you are assigned to a vehicle that also reports MDT location.
</Note>

### Map icons

On the map and in dispatch CAD:

* **Vehicle icons** (patrol car, fire truck, etc.) rotate with heading for apparatus / MDT telemetry.
* **Phone icon** (upright, no rotation) means the position came from a **handheld** officer GPS fix.

On a handheld phone, when person tracking is active, the map shows **your** local GPS fix even if you are assigned to a unit on the roster.

### Start and stop (handheld)

1. Open the dashboard **LOCATION** card or **Settings → Location services**.
2. Grant location permission if prompted.
3. Tap **Start tracking** to begin sending your position.
4. Tap **Stop tracking** to end updates.

Desktop MDT and activated apparatus tablets stop tracking when you sign out or disconnect the device session.

### Troubleshooting

| Symptom | What to check |
| ------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Assign a unit before starting MDT location tracking** | Dispatch must have you on an active crew with a resolvable call sign, or use unit-device activation on a shared tablet. |
| **Sign in required for phone location tracking** | Sign in with your officer account before starting handheld tracking. |
| GPS fix stale or missing | Tap **Refresh fix** on the dashboard; confirm OS location services and permissions are on. |
| Wrong unit on dispatch board | Verify profile call sign matches dispatch; see [Profile and unit](/mobile/profile-and-unit). |

## Navigation

* Map centers on call or GPS location when available.
* Error: **Unable to locate address on map** — verify address with dispatch.

<Note>Screenshot placeholder: Unable to locate address message</Note>

## Offline tiles

Map may use cached tiles on slow or offline connections — see [Connectivity and offline](/mobile/connectivity-offline).

## Tips

* Switch **NightOps** for night shifts to reduce glare.
* Confirm pin matches cross streets before proceeding.
* Use map for orientation — follow agency policy for en-route navigation apps.
* On handheld phones, start location tracking when your agency expects field GPS on the map.

## Warnings

<Warning>Driving while interacting with map may violate policy — park safe or use passenger/MDT mount.</Warning>
<Warning>Location data is sensitive — follow agency policy before sharing coordinates outside Cadmus.</Warning>
