GPS location tracking

Cadmus sends your position to dispatch so units appear on the live map. How tracking works depends on the device:
Handheld phone tracking reports your GPS position. It does not move your apparatus on the dispatch board. That avoids duplicate markers when you are assigned to a vehicle that also reports MDT location.

Map icons

On the map and in dispatch CAD:
  • Vehicle icons (patrol car, fire truck, etc.) rotate with heading for apparatus / MDT telemetry.
  • Phone icon (upright, no rotation) means the position came from a handheld officer GPS fix.
On a handheld phone, when person tracking is active, the map shows your local GPS fix even if you are assigned to a unit on the roster.

TODO — screenshot: Mobile map with a rotating vehicle unit icon and an upright phone icon (handheld officer). Capture both marker types on the same map if possible.

Start and stop (handheld)

  1. Open the dashboard LOCATION card or Settings → Location services.
  2. Grant location permission if prompted.
  3. Tap Start tracking to begin sending your position.
  4. Tap Stop tracking to end updates.
Desktop MDT and activated apparatus tablets stop tracking when you sign out or disconnect the device session.

Tips

  • Switch NightOps for night shifts to reduce glare.
  • Confirm pin matches cross streets before proceeding.
  • Use map for orientation — follow agency policy for en-route navigation apps.
  • On handheld phones, start location tracking when your agency expects field GPS on the map.

Warnings

Driving while interacting with map may violate policy — park safe or use passenger/MDT mount.
Location data is sensitive — follow agency policy before sharing coordinates outside Cadmus.
